Spring cleanup is the reset that gets your property out of winter and ready to grow. It generally includes raking out matted grass and leftover leaves, clearing branches and winter debris, cutting back ornamental grasses and perennials, re-edging beds, hauling away everything that's accumulated since November, and a first mow once the lawn is actively growing. On properties along driveways and walks, it also means dealing with what the plow left behind — sand, salt, and torn-up turf edges. Fresh mulch usually goes down at the end. It's the difference between a lawn that greens up evenly and one that spends May recovering.

The window opens once the ground has firmed up and closes when the lawn starts actively growing — around here that's usually late March through late April, depending on the thaw. Timing matters more than people realize. Rake too early, while the soil is still soggy, and you compact the ground and tear the crowns off perennials that haven't broken dormancy yet. Wait too long and you're mowing over debris and mulching weeds that already took hold. The practical marker: when you can walk the lawn without leaving footprints and perennials are pushing an inch or two, it's time. Book early — the calendar fills in a matter of weeks.

We start with a walkthrough of what winter actually did to the property, since that varies a lot year to year. The main things we're looking at: how much debris came down, whether the lawn has matted areas or snow mold, what condition the bed edges are in, and whether plow damage or salt burn needs repair along the drive. You'll want to decide whether mulch is part of the job — it's usually priced separately by the yard — and whether any beds need dethatching. We need equipment access and gates unlocked. That's it. You don't need to be home, and we'll haul everything off site.
