Hedge & shrub trimming Experts

Hedge and shrub trimming is cutting back and shaping the woody plantings around your property — privacy hedges, foundation shrubs, and ornamentals. There are two ways to do it and they aren't interchangeable. Shearing cuts the outer surface to a clean shape and is what formal hedges need. Selective hand pruning removes individual branches, takes out deadwood, and opens up the interior so light and air reach the middle of the plant. Most companies shear everything because it's faster. Shearing a shrub that should be hand-pruned gives you a green shell with a dead, woody center a few seasons later. We do whichever the plant actually needs.

Timing depends on the plant, and getting it wrong is why people lose a season of flowers. Spring bloomers — lilac, forsythia, viburnum, azalea — set next year's buds on old wood, so they get pruned right after they finish flowering. Cut them in fall or early spring and you've removed next spring's blooms. Summer bloomers like spirea and panicle hydrangea are pruned in late winter while dormant. Evergreens such as yew, boxwood, and arborvitae are best shaped in late spring once new growth has hardened off. One rule that applies to nearly everything in a cold climate: avoid hard pruning in late summer or early fall, since it pushes tender growth that won't survive the winter. Deadwood can come out any time of year.

We need a count and rough size of what's being trimmed, and a sense of the look you're after — a crisp formal hedge and a naturally shaped shrub are different amounts of work. Photos help. If anything has been left alone for several years, tell us: a badly overgrown shrub usually shouldn't be cut back hard in one pass. That often kills it or leaves it bare for two seasons. The right approach is rejuvenation pruning staged over two or three years, and we'll lay that out before starting. Beyond that we need access and gates unlocked, and you'll want to decide whether clippings get hauled off or left for municipal pickup.
